About the Department

The mission of the Community Development Department is to provide quality services, information, and support to DeKalb residents, elected officials, property owners, and visitors. 
The department is charged with the enforcement of locally adopted building codes, providing and maintaining the City's Comprehensive Plan and zoning regulations, facilitating an efficient development process, and influencing investment in the community. 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Preparing analysis and recommendations on the impact of specific development projects
  • Achieving balanced, sustained, and quality growth
  • Promoting the retention and expansion of existing business and industries
  • Promoting and provide for other activities intended to enhance and improve the overall quality of life in the community

  • Accessing permits, information, and maps
  • Planning for a vibrant, diverse, and distinct DeKalb
  • Participating in the many programs and projects we administer such as comprehensive planning, federal community development block grants, and more
