Special Units

  1. Bike Patrol

    The DeKalb Police Department started a Bike Patrol program in the Spring of 2001.

  2. Canine Unit

    The DeKalb Police Department has deployed a canine team to support our Patrol Division.

  3. DeKalb County Special Operations Team

    The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the DeKalb Police Department have combined resources to implement a joint Special Operations Team.

  4. Domestic Violence Unit

    The Domestic Violence Unit was established in 2013 with establishing goals of reducing calls related to domestic violence, improving domestic violence investigations, working in concert with Safe Passage and the state’s attorney’s office, and to increase intervention to prevent violence associated with domestic situations.

  5. Field Training

    The Field Training Program is designed to prepare new officers to perform the essential duties of a police officer and to enhance the professionalism of the department through a contemporary, vigorous training system.

  6. Honor Guard

    The DeKalb Police Department Honor Guard was formed in 1996 for the dedication of Moudy Park.

  7. Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System

    The DeKalb Police Department has an officer on the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System Mobile Field Force.

  8. Marijuana Leaf Identification

    In December of 2009, a DeKalb police sergeant completed an 80 hour training course in Marijuana Leaf Identification.

  9. Motor Unit

    The Motor Unit is used for traffic enforcement, special events, and as a tool to interact with the public, especially children and youths.

  10. Resident Officer

    The Resident Officer Program of DeKalb was created to improve the quality of life within individual neighborhoods in the City of DeKalb by assigning an officer to reside in designated neighborhoods and directly partnering with residents to find solutions to neighborhood problems.

  11. School Resource Officer

    The School Resource Officer program is a cooperative effort between the DeKalb Police Department and the DeKalb School District.

  12. Take-Home Car

    The Take-Home Car program allows for marked police cars to be stationed throughout the City of DeKalb.

  13. Targeted Response Unit

    The Targeted Response Unit addresses street crime and quality of life issues in order to improve public safety.
