In honor of Disability Awareness Month, please join us for an in-depth exploration of disability and poetry, as well as an opportunity to articulate your personal experiences with disabilities, special needs, mental health conditions, and neurodiversity through the written word. In this poetry workshop, you will be introduced to Listen to the Silence, a collection of poems by Sarah Ismail. As Ismail explains in her artist statement, she grew up never seeing people who looked like her or shared her experience of cerebral palsy in books, poetry, or other age-appropriate media. We will discuss our experiences with disability, as well as poetry or other creative works that you feel best articulate their experience and work in small groups and individually with workshop leaders to help articulate those experiences through poetry. Participants will be invited (but not required) to read their drafts to the group, and possibly share them with the community.
