[ARCHIVED] City of DeKalb Public Transit System to Provide Fare Free Rides

buses

In light of the rapidly developing public health situation with COVID-19, the City of DeKalb Public Transit System, in partnership with TransVAC and Huskie Line, will be temporarily offering free rides to all passengers on all fixed route, deviated fixed route and paratransit services. Fare free rides will begin Wednesday, March 18th and shall continue through Tuesday, March 31st.

Please note that the Route 12 (Elburn Shuttle) will remain as a fared route during this time.

Allowing free rides encourages social distancing by eliminating the need for Bus Operators to handle cash, coin, and transfer slips with passengers.  Free rides will also allow parents the ability to travel to various meal distribution sites with their children while local schools are not in session to provide daily lunches.  While we do encourage all passengers to stay home if they are sick or able to do so, we recognize that may not be possible for everyone, so the City of DeKalb Public Transit System is removing barriers to help those in need to get to important destinations, such as work, grocery stores, and assistance centers.

The City of DeKalb Public Transit System is currently operating on a Special Break Service schedule to accommodate Northern Illinois University’s recent decision to suspend face-to-face instruction. TransVAC and Huskie Line staff continue to employ sanitation efforts throughout their vehicles.

We are monitoring the situation closely and are prepared to increase our efforts to protect employees and passengers as the situation evolves.  We ask that all passengers also do their part to stop the spread of infection by following recommendations set forth by the DeKalb County Health Department (DCHD), such as washing hands regularly and staying home when sick.
