What types of construction projects require a building permit?
As outlined Chapter 23 and Chapter 24 of the Municipal Code, to protecting the public by reducing potential hazards of unsafe construction practices and thereby ensuring the public health, safety, and welfare, building permits are required for virtually all construction, alteration, repair, demolition, and movement of any building or structure within the City of DeKalb corporate limits. The following projects do NOT require a permit: installing replacement windows and doors (as long as the size of opening does not change), re-roofing (as long as the sheeting is not removed), and exterior siding.

If you have any questions as to whether a permit is required, please contact the Building & Code Enforcement Division at 815-748-2070. For the required permit applications and fees, please follow this link.
