The City of DeKalb and the DeKalb Fire department worked together using the City Website to create a Fire Truck Naming Contest . The recently purchased 2008 Pierce Quantum will replace the current aerial ladder truck “Big John” after 26 years of service. It is fitting that the new ladder truck has a name for its service time to the residents of DeKalb. The DeKalb Firefighters created three naming concepts and the community has the opportunity to decide which name will be given the truck. The naming contest started on Monday, March 14, 2016 and ended Monday, April 18, 2016. To read about the three naming options and why they were selected as options click

The contest was created utilizing a module on the back end of the website. The
forms center allows citizens to voice their opinions while providing City Staff an easy way to collect data on the responses. After creating the form and publishing a news-flash and a
Facebook post, the City was flooded with responses. On the final day of voting (4/18) the City had received 636 responses! "Rip" Roaring ended up winning with 77% of the total votes.
The contest ended up gaining enough attention to be featured in a Daily Chronicle
article and several radio announcements. Still looking to learn more information?
