Engineering & Transportation
Engineering is part of the Engineering / Transportation Division of the Public Works Department and has overall responsibility for the design and maintenance of the infrastructure of DeKalb that includes:
- Alleys
- Bike paths
- Bridges
- Sidewalk
- Storm sewers
- Street lights
- Streets
- Traffic signals
Duties
The Engineering Division also has involvement in community services for the following program activities:- Design assistance including residential and commercial site plan reviews, subdivision review and developer advisement of coordinated street extensions to include water mains and storm sewer
- Stormwater activities including drainage review, homeowner grading assistance, floodplain issues, and flood zone determination
- Traffic assistance including traffic and parking studies and regional traffic counts
​Overweight/Oversize Vehicle Permits
Effective September 1, 2017, the City of DeKalb will be implementing a new process for securing overweight/oversize permits. We will be using an online-based permitting system via www.oxcartpermits.com. The previous system of submitting requests for overweight/oversize permits (via fax and/or email) will be discontinued and all old permitting forms submitted after August 31, 2017, will not be accepted or approved. Any company wanting to apply for an overweight/oversize permit for the City of DeKalb, on or after September 1, 2017, must utilize the Oxcart permitting system at www.oxcartpermits.com.Special Tasks
The Division also undertakes special tasks of the City Council pertaining to levee improvements, flooded home grant buyouts, highway and bridge replacement grant writing, speed studies and traffic signage additions, railroad safety improvements, capital budgeting, and advising on new development impacts to existing neighborhoods. The Division has engineers for preparing plans and technical staff for construction monitoring of various municipal projects and new developments.Cross Department / Division Assistance
Engineering staff works with other City departments and divisions in overseeing transportation and building development within DeKalb and the DeKalb metropolitan area including:- Building and Code Enforcement, part of Community Development, provides assistance and inspection of all building construction within DeKalb
- Planning and Development, part of Community Development, oversees all zoning and subdivision issues within DeKalb
- Street Operations oversees the maintenance of all municipal roadways within DeKalb
- The DeKalb Sycamore Area Transportation Study (DSATS) provides oversight and transportation planning services to the DeKalb region and is staffed within the Engineering / Transportation Division of Public Works
- The DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport oversees the management of the municipal Airport
- Water Operations oversees the development and maintenance of all DeKalb water and sewerage systems
