The North First Street bridge has reopened to vehicular traffic. The bridge deck remains closed to pedestrian use at this time, while the bike path connection to First Street has been fully restored for use.
The significant construction project, replacing the bridge over the Kishwaukee River, has now completed a milestone. The previous bridge, which was built in 1977, was completely removed and rebuilt as a single-span structure. The bridge was scheduled for reconstruction under state guidelines based on bi-annual inspections.
Completion of all aspects of the project scope, including the new traffic separated path, is expected in the spring. Users should anticipate continued project activities and efforts this year yet and through the spring of 2024. No further closures or detours are anticipated, but caution remains required when encountering project activities.
The City appreciates the public's ongoing support and understanding during the work which brings this important and challenging infrastructure project to our community.
