[ARCHIVED] N. First St. Bridge Reopened to Pedestrians

Work continues on the North First Street bridge project.

The sidewalk on the westside of the North First Street bridge has reopened to pedestrians as work continues on the infrastructure improvement project.

Safety railings meeting full I-DOT standards have been installed along the bridge, allowing for the reopening of the westside sidewalk. The bridge reopened to vehicular traffic last week following its demolition and reconstruction.

Both motorists and pedestrians are urged to use caution since construction activity continues immediately adjacent to the bridge.

The pathway for pedestrians and bicyclists on the east side of the bridge deck will remain closed until its completion next year.

The City will be working with state officials on the creation of an architectural-style barrier for the inner edge of the pathway. This barrier along with those planned for the Lucinda Bridge project will be similar to the barriers on the College Avenue bridge.

Progress is also being made on the Peace Road widening.

Paving work has been completed for the project widening the road to four lanes from the tollway through the Fairview Drive intersection. Next week, the permanent lane striping will be done.

The West Fairview Drive detour will remain in place through next week.
